I joined P-E International as a trainee in 1987, after completing a Higher National Diploma in Computer Studies. During my time with P-E, I gained experience with DEC, IBM and NIXDORF hardware, mainly in a programming role. I spent my first 4 months working on an in-house development project, programming in COBOL in a VAX environment. I also spent 7 months on an IBM CICS/DB2 project, programming in COBOL 2.
My NIXDORF experience comprises a 9 month programming project and 6 months testing as part of an EFTPOS system for 2 different clients.
Since then, I have adopted the PROGRESS 4GL/RDBMS as my main area of expertise and initially spent 3 months working for ICL, programming in PROGRESS. My latter experience is as follows: 16 months contract for Grand Metropolitan Retailing (now Chef & Brewer Group); 4 month contract with ICL Retail in Bracknell; 2 months with ICL Retail in Maidenhead; 3 month contract for AT&T Istel in Wakefield; 6 more months with ICL Retail in Maidenhead; a 1 month fill-in contract with NCR (Manufacturing) in Dundee; 5 months with Strathclyde Regional Council in Glasgow; 7 months with Standard Check Book in Radstock, near Bath; 3 weeks with Trafalgar House Construction in Croydon, this contract being terminated due to injury; 3 months with Distributive Computer Services Ltd., based in Leamington Spa; 8 months with Trafalgar House Construction in Maple Cross; 9 months with ICL Retail again in Bracknell; 4 months with CAP Gemini in Aston, Birmingham, 2 months with ATMS, also in Aston, 12 months with TEC (UK) in Watford, 5 months with Overland Footwear in London and, finally, 8 months with W.T.
